Knee Scooter vs. Forearm Crutches: Which Is Right for You?
If you’re non-weight-bearing on a foot or ankle, the two most common options are a knee scooter and forearm crutches. They solve the same problem in very different ways. Here’s how to choose, and why many people end up using both.
Knee scooter: rest your knee, roll along
You rest your injured leg’s shin on a padded platform and push with your good leg.
Pros: little to no upper-body effort, very stable, easy on the hands and armpits, comfortable for longer distances (stores, work, errands).
Cons: needs smooth, flat surfaces; useless on stairs; bulky to transport and store; doesn’t work well in tight spaces like small bathrooms.
Forearm crutches: go anywhere, work your arms
Pros: handle stairs, curbs, tight spaces, and uneven ground; compact and easy to transport; keep you upright and mobile almost anywhere.
Cons: require upper-body strength and balance; can tire or strain your hands, wrists, and shoulders if the crutches are poorly designed.
Quick comparison
| Knee scooter | Forearm crutches | |
|---|---|---|
| Long distances | Excellent | Tiring |
| Stairs / curbs | No | Yes |
| Tight spaces | Poor | Good |
| Upper-body effort | Minimal | Moderate–high |
| Transport/storage | Bulky | Compact |
